Back to School

The girls of the glam squad have gone back to school! To teach, of course. They have traveled to a few schools around Hamilton to share their expertise and inspire creativity in our youth. Learn about how it went in this month’s blog.

Our experience:

Kim and a few other members of the salon went to different schools in the community to teach some basic nail safety and design techniques. They had a wonderful experience, and Kim is so glad she did the presentations. Some of the classes she spoke to were super engaged and interested in the beauty industry. Some students stayed behind to ask questions, and Kim could see the impact she was having. Working with the teachers at the school was a great way to incorporate more young people into the nail industry. In the presentation, they also included a live demonstration of how to apply gel-x nails because they are a really good beginner/at-home system. The structure and shape are pre-done so people just getting into nails can focus on proper preparation and nail art, rather than trying to build the structure of the nail. The presentation also had a demonstration of some beginner-friendly nail art. Kim did some designs with blooming gel and then had the students do their own blooming gel designs, because it looks awesome and is an easy product to work with. Overall, it was an incredible experience, and Kim hopes to continue going to schools and providing representation of the beauty industry as a career worth looking into.

Our ‘Why”:

You might be wondering what gave Kim this idea. She noticed a lot of younger girls have a growing interest in doing their own nails, especially with the growing popularity on TikTok and online communities. With the rise of these free lessons, Kim also wants to ensure that the teenagers that are interested in exploring the beauty/nail industry know how to do it correctly and safely. There is a lot of technique and knowledge that is required for nails to be done safely and without developing a gel allergy or other medical concerns. Additionally, we know that a lot of people hear backlash and negatives about going into the beauty industry as a career, but Kim knows that lots of things are possible with proper guidance, environment, and determination. It is possible to make money in the industry, and representing that to youth that might be skeptical but interested is part of the driving motivation behind these instructional presentations. Reaching out to younger kids allows base knowledge to be gained and the nail industry to be a welcoming and safe space where careers and creativity can be built.

That’s all, folks! Check back next month for more exciting nail info!
